Terraces
Raised beach terraces at Turakirae Head, on the southern Wairarapa coast.
Sudden uplifts caused by historic earthquakes have left a succession of
terraces which are still evident today. The latest uplift was produced by
the 1855 magnitude 8.1 Wairarapa earthquake and the next is associated
with an earthquake that occurred around 1460. Probable dates of the
higher terraces are roughly 1100 B.C and 2900 B.C. (Photo by L. Homer).
